Book marketing strategy: Blog posts for SEO

Part of my book website’s SEO strategy is to create content around focal keywords to help people on search engines find our website and our book.

One keyword that intrigued me when I was exploring possibilities was “photographer quotes” — it had a decent search volume and was rated as relatively easy in terms of how difficult it would be to appear in searches. (If you’d like to read about how I determine these things and picked some keywords for my book’s website, here’s a short blog post that walks you through the process).

As it turns out, our book is filled with “photographer quotes.” Each chapter features an interview with a working photographic artist, reflecting on their practice, educational experiences, career advice, and more. There are numerous other short-form interviews peppered throughout the text, too, so there is lots of useful content to pull from.

A strategy my co-author and I are currently exploring is excerpting sections of our book that lend themselves to our keywords, and our artist interviews are frankly great material to help showcase the range of perspectives and ideas our book shares.

Here’s a sample blog post we wrote that is 95% content pulled from the book. Note that included our focal keyword - “photographer quotes” - in the blog post’s title to make sure search engines see that it’s relevant for people searching for that keyword. The other key place to put your focal keywords is in the post’s first paragraph as search engines also look here to see what your content is about. Another focal keyword for us - “fine art photographer” - is embedded in our first line.

We’ll be tracking how it does in organic search and in social media posts we make about it. Stay tuned for results!
